Why do small hairdressers have such an important effect on the local society..?

As you can tell from my profile picture, I am bald, however, this does not stop me from visiting the hairdressers, usually as the designated driver for family members.

If I am ever waiting for anything, I always take the time for people watching, potentially my most interesting hobby. Now to the hairdresser: a family member has attended this small hairdresser in a local precinct for over 40 years and in that time, it has changed much but the quality has always been the key driver.

I have waited at this hairdresser many times, and I always reflect on the value it delivers for its clients, who appear to be a true cross-section of society from the elderly to the youngster who are looked after by different stylists.

Most of the business world is now striving to drive annuity revenue, drive down CAC, and understand LTV and many other financial acronyms that measure success. This hairdresser manages all these areas, the sheer number of older clients that have their hair 'set' is remarkable and you can safely say that they drive a considerable amount of 'annuity' revenue for the business.

And to be honest I also don't know many businesses that still have clients coming back to them after 40 years but the impact they have in other areas we should all consider, below I have highlighted several as food for thought:

  1. Community hub: This hairdresser serves as a social gathering place where people come together to relax, chat, and connect with others in the community. It provides a safe space for clients to unwind and escape the stresses of daily life.
  2. Economic contribution: This salon contributes to the local economy by employing skilled workers, purchasing supplies, and attracting customers to other nearby businesses.
  3. Customer loyalty and relationships: As mentioned this hairdresser has developed long-lasting relationships with their clients, with many spanning several decades. These strong bonds foster customer loyalty and encourage repeat business.
  4. Community support: This hairdresser offers discounts to certain groups, or provides free services to those in need including picking up clients if they can't get in, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.
  5. Networking opportunities: Hairdressers create valuable connections with other local businesses and organizations, leading to the sharing of information usually in the form of rumour or gossip. But as we know this can be a provider of real value to some.
  6. Personal well-being: The stylists are often informal confidants and support systems for their clients, potentially contributing to the mental health and emotional well-being of their clients. Also, when people haven't been seen alerting others to a potential issue.

Most businesses cannot adopt this list as a whole, as we operate in different markets, with different needs and clients, but some areas are worth thinking about and considering. The humble hairdresser in the precinct is often a place to sit and learn...

is this aimed at me ??????

Good blog! I would add for me that my hairdresser always offer a different perspective to how I see things and makes me think broader. I love the insights from our conversations that make me more curious.
