Each month, our Faces of Innovation series spotlights someone at HudsonAlpha whose work is shaping the future of science and discovery. This month, meet Scott Newberry, Director of our Strategic Software group. With a background in software engineering and applied math, Scott leads the team behind research-supporting tools like Codi, a powerful application used to identify rare genetic variants. His move from the defense industry to biotech helped shape HudsonAlpha’s approach to integrating software, AI, and genomics, and he’s just getting started. “We truly are using genomics to improve life. We get to say it, and we get to live it.” ???? Curious about the person behind the code? Here are a few fun facts about Scott: ?? He’s been at HudsonAlpha for 15 years ?? He’s passionate about using AI to support research ?? He’s married to Kim Newberry, a research associate in the Myers Lab Scott’s work is a perfect example of how technology and science combine to accelerate discovery and improve lives. Follow along each month as we share more behind-the-scenes stories from the people powering innovation at HudsonAlpha. #HudsonAlpha #FacesOfInnovation #StrategicSoftware #Bioinformatics #TechInBiotech #GenomicsToImproveLife #BehindTheScience #STEMCareers #AIandGenomics

As agriculture faces mounting pressures from climate change and global food demands, traditional tools are no longer enough. That’s why HudsonAlpha developed KhufuPAN?, a cutting-edge pangenome platform that empowers breeders to see the full genetic picture. By analyzing variation across entire populations, KhufuPAN unlocks new insights into genetic diversity and helps identify critical trait-associated variants that were previously out of reach. The future of crop and livestock improvement starts here ???? ?? Senior Scientist Dr. Jacob Loupe from the Myers Lab gave us a breakdown of flow cytometry, a powerful tool that helps researchers dive deep into specific cell types found in the brain. Machine Highlights: ?? Analyzes cells one by one in real time ?? Uses fluorescent tags to sort cells ?? Measures size, shape, and protein levels At HudsonAlpha, flow cytometry supports advances in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases by providing detailed data on individual cells. The brain houses many different cell types, including neurons, microglia, and many more. When we study diseases like Alzheimer's disease, bipolar spectrum disorder, depression, and more, only a few cell types might be of interest for a given experiment. This powerful machine allows for precision in our experiments and saves time so our researchers can focus on data analysis and setting up the next experiment! Huge thanks to Dr. Loupe and the Myers Lab for making complex science easy to understand. Stay tuned for more insights from the lab! ?? #HudsonAlpha #FlowCytometry #BiotechBreakdown #InsideTheLab #STEMexplained #GenomicsInAction #HudsonAlphaResearch
