We recently hosted an insightful event on Institutional Staking, and it was great to dive deep into this evolving area of digital assets by Daniel Lee MBA LL.M, Chin Tah Ang, Samuel Chong, CFA, Danny Chong, CFtP and Colin Verhaegen ! For those who missed it, or want a recap, here are some key takeaways: We explored the crucial distinctions between custodial and non-custodial solutions and their regulatory implications. A big point of discussion was how Staking as a Service (StaaS) offers institutions a familiar, ETF-like simplicity for engagement, albeit at a lower yield. We also looked at how different protocols offer varying risk-return profiles – generally, the stronger the protocol, the lower the return and risk (think ~3% for Ethereum). Regulatory stances differ significantly across jurisdictions, with Singapore, for example, having a more cautious approach to retail staking. It’s important to remember that staking yield, DeFi yield, and liquid staking yield are all distinct. Crucially, staking is not borrowing and lending, and there's a clear difference between rehypothecation and restaking. Finally, we touched on the ongoing challenges for liquid staking, including concerns around it being seen as a security, centralization risks, and overall complexity.
